How to install a RB20DET into a VL..

RB20DET CONVERSION

This is a conversion that can be done reasonably cheap if most of the work
is done by yourself...

First thing to do is sort out if you want the car to be a manual or auto.
saying this is that there is a difference btwn the auto and man motors

I chose manual when i did the conversion originally

first thing to do is take out the rb30 motor and g/box and discard your
extractor pipes

there are a fair few things you have to change on the rb20det to suit the VL

1. replace the oil pressure sensor with a vL one
2. replce the water temp sensor with a VL one
3. change over the engine mounts to vl ones
4. change the harmonic ballancer to a vl one
5. change the p/steering pump over to a vl one (it fits just)
6. change over the air con pump if you require it otherwise bin it :)
7. discard the cruise control box(calais) it makes things difficult to get at
and the cable is too long...
8. replace the timing belt for saftey

now that you have done all this, with the rb20 manual g/box change over the
slave cylinder to a Vl one, then bolt up the clutch and box

now it is time to put the engine in, i find it eaiser to put the whole lot
in at once. the vl manual tailshft will fit and so will the crossmember.

the motor will fit fine and it will all bolt up ok, this is where the fun!

the wiring of the engine is best left to an auto electrician or a performance
shop

now with the car all wired up and goin head to a exhaust shop and get them
to make up a peice of pipe from the turbo to the cat

things to remember

1. DONT flog the **** out of the motor at first, take it easy for the first
100ks then change the oil and filter, most motor sit at improters for some
time before being sold....
2. the speedo will be bout 20km/h out- to fix change diff to 4.3 or 4.11
3. your tacho wont work, the fix is to get a converter box made, PM me
and I will send you a copy of the circuit
4. Dont overboost the turbo, for safety set it at 13psi the turbo is ceramic
5. Buy a turbotimer
6. Get a large hiflowing front mount intercooler
7. if you go auto have fun!

There is a heap of mods you can do to make the rb20 get up and go
1. Bigger steel wheel turbo
2. Bigger injectors (the stock ones are not good for hi HP)
3. Get a 3" mandel exhaust from the turbo
4. Cams for RB20's are dynamite $$$$
5. Aftermarket injection and plenum etc..

If you are goin to do the conversion I have for sale a
RB20DET automatic gearbox VGC - best offer!
and various rb20det bits and peices, PM me

If there is anything i have left out please let me know..

good work :)

poohkies 09-03-04 17:26

dude, u said to change all the sensors ?? the rb20 how does your computer read the temp and oil sessiors if u have changed them, this would cause problems with your computer ??
wiring up the computer is a pieace of peace, u can get diagram from imports shops, takes about 2 hours
i wouldn't waste my money getting the exhaust shop to make one, just use the standard dump as this fits fine, or even get after market one for $200
if u buy your motor from sss automotive, they give this to u.
All your tacho needs is a resister to change the amp it's like 15cents from ****ies
but other than that all good :)

mate ive done the conversion, the dump dipe from a rb20 does not fit, i tried that!!!

i didnt say change all the sensors just the oil pressure and water temp!!!!

Oh and your resistor thing is a load of **** I tried it and it does not work, you need a converter box to change the digital signal from the ecu to a analog signal.....

RIX-PSI 11-06-04 16:03

hey,
jus wondering what sort of power coud u see out of an RB20 with injectors, cooler,a/m comp, bigger (but not to big)turbo and zorst???

poohkies 12-06-04 11:55

guys up here has Supra front mountm, microtech, 3 inch zorst and rb25 turbo, standard injectors hes's getting 180 kw at the wheels

Just to clarify, the dump pipe of an RB30et will fit onto and rb20

thanks

does all of these change over to vl or vl turbo??

if you are goin from a RB30 engine (turbo or n/a) to an rb20det then yes you have to do these changes as mentioned above

quick run down on why you have to change these things

1. rb20 oil sensor is used to tell the oil temperature not oil pressure as on a vl dash
2.to make the water temp guage to work you have to change the sensor to a VL one
3. The RB20 engine mounts are a little different as they have a metal bit on them to slot into a r32 mount as such these wont work on a VL
4.You will find it difficult runnin the vl pump with a rb20 ballancer, different belt pattern
5.Rb20 power steer pump is a dual stage pump an such is not easily adaptable to the VL, so just replace it with the vl unit it will bolt up(just)
6.I dont see the point in using air con, but from the looks of it if you just use a VL one it would make it easy and will run off the RB30 ballencer as described before..

ok thanx for the info!!!!

GMCHSR 19-06-04 03:31

just thinking how much would the conversion cost including engine and gearbox, that's me buying the stuff putting it into my car and then getting someone 2 wire it togeather

2500 for complete motor and 5spd package, this is what i payed at SSS Automotive in sydney

If you can put the motor and box in yourself then it will be quite cheap

intercooler and piping $1500-2000, contact JET-6 for cheap intercoolers

as for the wiring i left it to JPC who wired it up into the VL loom

so from memory it cost me around $5000 all up but if i did it all over again i could have done it cheaper..

The RB20 ECU doesn't take any input from the oil sensor. This is just for the dash warning lamp. I disagree with VLRB20DET's comment that this measures temperature tho, afaik it is a pressure switch.

RB20's have two water temp sensors. One is used by the ecu and the other is for the temp gauge. Obviously you don't change the ECU sensor but the gauge sender needs to suit the VL dash.

ok browny thanks for pointing out the rb20 oil sensor is for a dash light only, but to make the oil pressure guage in the vl dash you must replace the rb20 sensor on the block to a VL berlina/calais unit to make it work

as for the water you are right you only change the sensor for the dash to the VL sensor to make the VL dash work..

OldGold 22-06-04 04:43

2500 bucks for an RB20! Talk about anal rape!

I was told roughly that for an RB25!

VLRB20DET 22-06-04 10:41

2500 was motor and gearbox with loom etc..

i dont think you will get a rb25det and 5spd for the same price

poohkies 13-07-04 14:46

r u talking RB25de auto, yes, that arn't that much more, RB25DET with 5 speed manual, your looking closer to 4 Grand with wiring loom etc.,
If u can get it for $2500 your going well.

If u are going to get the engine wire loom package, it's very easy to bolt up,

Depending on what car you have,

If u have a VL /NA 5 Speed it's a piece of piss
VL Turbo, change yok
Auto's no idea sorry

My mate brought the engine of sss automotive
He brought the wiring diagram for a RB20DET into VL from Japanese Automotive ?? (the ones that advertise in Zoom) $150 and takes about 3 hours 2 do your self, very simple

I have a VL Turbo body, i had to change my Tail shaft yoke Change the dump pipe of the RB30et bolted straight up to my RB20DET couldn't believe it!
I got my Injectors Cleaned, new thermo stat, oil filter Timing Belt etc, new clutch, RB30e Flywheel Machined,

think all up cost me about $3 and a bit, i didn't have intercooler, just ran the turbo to inlet manifold and standard boost,

DISTURBED 13-07-04 16:40

I just bought an rb20det for me gf's auto calais but it doesnt have gearbox or computer/wiring:( i rang the local wreckers and they have nothing! sum1 help me :) ive got no clue on what little parts i need to do the conversion.

vltrb-0 13-07-04 16:43

im not positive if the engines and comp are the same but i stripped alot out of an r32 gts-t got the manual computer out of her if its any use to ya i can sell it

DISTURBED 14-07-04 18:38

also how hard is is to fit an rb25 5spd to an rb20det? whats involved? VLRB20DET could you post up a master list of exactly what parts are needed jus to straighten things out, really appreciate it m8:)

VLRB20DET 25-07-04 16:13

i have no idea on how to put up a rb25 5spd behind a rb20, best idea is to put a post of www.skylinesaustralia.com or www.skylinesdownunder.co.nz

warpz0r 29-08-04 20:59

well a master list for a rb20det into a VL - i had a auto VL

Manual VL drive shaft
Manual gearbox mount
VL clutch master cylinder
MF7? clutch slave cylinder
Hydraulic hose to connect clutch cylinders
clutch pedal
engine/gearbox/wiring/computer

I beleive all u need to get is the RB25 flywheel, may be the same as the RB30 and a RB25 starter motor, also could be the same as the rb30

BADVLSL 31-08-04 11:42

i wouldnt bother replacing the RB20 gearbox with a RB25 one.. they are just as strong as each other!

poohkies 31-08-04 12:58

u could also just find a N/A RB30 5 speed, they are the same!
