Boating/Watersports Thread

Hey guys,

I'm looking at buying a boat, and I just wanted to get a few pointers from the poeple who have or have had them in the past. Things about registration process, types of motors to suit types of boats, load limits, steering, etc etc blah blah blah. I'm sort of a novice here.

Feel free to fill the thread up with pics of boats (no, NOT VNs please ) or other watersport associated things.

Cheers, Tim

BOAT = Bring Out Another Thousand

Apart from that, your best off starting by deciding what sort of use the boat will get, then start from there. Different hull designs will lend themselves to multi purpose uses, or some are only good for 1 thing (2 if your rooting in it)

And this is my toy...

well this is ourse..

its a 23ft caribbean crusaider..

my old mans had it for about 7 years.. manily used for game fishing, but for now the snapper season. (bout 1 month away)

it use to have an old trailer, the 80 series cruiser pulled it decently well.. not an issue, but we built a new trailer and it struggled bad, thats why we put in the 454.. even the 100 series v8 ones pull **** house..

weighs about 3.3 tonne empty, excluding 400L of fuel and around 200 kg + of gear.. plus when u fish hard in game, you come back with 300 kg of fish.. lol, however the new engine pulls well..

running twin yamaha 140's and goes alright.. tiny bit sluggish on take off but still goes alright.. might upgrade to twin 170's soon...

heres some pics..

might get some new ones since we gave it a cut and polish this weekend.. well atleast one half, lol

my old man

Depends. I'm a fan of buying something get it fixed up, so preferably a solid hull, and preferably painted. It'll be used for cruising with mates, so it doesn't need to be flash. Maybe a little fishing, if I can be arsed.

Looking at this:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....MEWA:IT&ih=014

What do you guys think?

Edit: Nice boat PSI-EFI! A bit big for me though. I'll be towing it with a VN V8 manual, so that'll probably tear the thing to shreds.

I had a 1750 bullet, 200 hp on the back, it went really well and was only 10K that was afew years ago aswell
When you go cruising or skiing with mates, make sure they put in for fuel, they suck the arse out of the tank if your putting your foot in it a bit

Probably around four people at most times. I'm not a fan of the colour, but its the type of hull that interests me.

Yeah, thats right. I don't mind buying something without the motor to begin with, with the intention of fixing up the boat. What sort of price range would I be looking at? And how big a motor? Does an outboard bolt onto something like that?

Like I said, I don't know much about this.

I don't want to do it up (as in the first pic above), just something a few of us can cruise around in. Don't really want a tinny, as they look sh*t and are pretty uncomfortable.

i reckon its a little to small for 4 people, however you will still fit them all.. you will pull sumthing in the 16-18 ft with a vn v8 aswell considering its not too heavy..

that boat your looking at previously had an outboard.. maybe try contacting the owner and asking what sort of hp they were running.. imho 80 hp would go awesome in that

don't buy a jetski, i bought a seadoo last year, yes they are sick fun but if you don't have a few mates with them to can get over it quick. I'm selling my xp this year and buying a ski boat.

If your buying a outboard ski boat check for damage to the transom from the outboard hitting logs etc and rot in the hull has caught a few mates out.

nothing worse than going fishing with mates, spending $700 of fuel, supplying all the gear, them taking some fish home, and them not chipping in.. or even helping to wash the boat

Ah yeah, it does look a little small now that I look at the back seat.

If I can make it snappy thats a bonus, but is mostly going to be a cruiser. Whats involved in installing a non-outboard motor (I'm sure theres a name for this type of setup)?

inboard

transom migh have to be modified to allow an engine to sit there.. plus you need the hole through the back for the shaft to the prop, i dunno much about the in boards..

my mate bought one with a 253, went pretty good.. was ****ed though, and the rear seal or sumthing use to leak, lol, drowned it soooo many times..

Honestly mate, if you dont know much about boats I would reccomend you buy one that is ready to go, and get an inspection, there are heaps of guys around Vic that do it Noel Aarons is fantastic if he is still in the game, you can find his number in the trading post, they check the engine, transom and floor for rot all that type of thing, like an racv report on a car.

You will be a hell of a lot safer in a good quality boat rather than one you have done up, and like you said yourself, you dont know much about them, its not like a car where if you break down you walk over to the sevo, you get wet and have to swim, or worse paddle the ******* in.

couldnt of said it better myself.. i would highly reccomend that.. fair enough if you have experience, but it can get hard mate when **** like that happens..

now is the time to buy boats are cheaper in winter usually, and u can pick up a half decent ski boat for around 6-7k that wont let you down, try stick with something 253, 308, if u dont want to be emptying your pockets for fuel, if u dont mind paying for fuel go 350, (at least you know parts are available pretty cheaply if u need them with these motors) if you dont know to much about boats you will pick up on things pretty quickly inboards are not to much different to a car apart from the exhaust and cooling side of things really.
