its an exhaust leak...snapped exhaust manifold studs..i suggest getting it done professionally as you will more then likely snap one removing the manifold so if they are doing it it is there own fault not yours therefore costing less.but it is definately exhaust leak..fix it up and u will notice ur car sounding so nice and new no joke i jsut had myne done..

no, might not be an exhaust leak. The most common problem with the VL's "ticking" noise is the lifters. try changing oil a couple of times and use that lifter free crap. if that doesnt work the lifter is most probably damaged

My calais has 81,000kms (original).

My mates calais has 395,XXXkms (original) with 1 head rebuild & now is a turbo converted engine.

near 400,000km old piston rings now running a turbo on a high comp engine & holding fine. Can't argue with that for a 1986-88 model family car!!

My previous 87 SL VL Commodore has 88,000 original KMS on the clock. I wrote it off about 4 months ago; hit a still 4WD at 100kms an hour, writing off both cars... The engine-block is still good. The alternator, distributor, etc. have all been damaged beyond repair, the head has been jarred, and the harmonic-balancer has been busted externally.

I intend on taking the block and 5-Speed box out, and just building it back up to new. Put it in my current 86 VL Berlina. It currently has 315,000kms on the clock, with a full engine rebuild 70,000km ago.

Though it's an Auto, and I'd rather whack my old engine in. There was something about that engine, **** it went... I miss it.

Yeah I had that happen a few years ago, dash comes out quite easily
and the gear slips off plus the wheel assembly can shift left a mm or so,
its dead easy to fix by inserting a bent piece of plastic to act like a spring
provided the gear isnt chewed up, the plastic gears are quite tough even
after they have been out of position for a while, if you were in Perth,
Id show yah, might make a vid one day as someone had that prob a
few weeks ago and was coming back for a fuserail, wonder if he would mind
I ripped his dash apart
