NSW Registration

Just interested to know when certain characters came out (Approximate year).

For example registrations starting with "AM" or close to comparison in NSW
I have another Vl with these.

Anyone have some rough idea?

Over here in SA, our most common plates like

"U" series were from the 80's
"V" late 80's
"W" 90's
"X" 2004

Cheers

Way before VL's were even thought of assuming you are talking about black on yellow three letter, three number style plates.

Thanks for the reply.

The style I'm talking about is 6 character.
"AM 66 xx" more current.

Black writing on yellow.

Thanks again

U was about late 1981/1982
W was late 1997/1998
R was 1966
S was about 1973

The U series didn't go in alphabetical sequence, they released them in all sorts of weird patterns years apart.

One example... ULxxxx and UMxxxxx came out in 1982/3, yet UJxxxx and UKxxxx are very common plates on '87/'88 VLs.

Thanks for that, very interesting.

I also understand that here in SA that it is not that hard to acquire older plates for any car so that makes things not 100% (if you know what I mean).

Yes you can get reissued R and S series plates. U V W and X you can't. If you were to get a set of R or S on your car and you looked them up on ezy reg, it will often come up with the details of the car there were originally on from 1960s - 80's, as well as your car.
