Not looking forward to pushing a locked diff. (Turing wise)
Would not advise it. Not only is the weight on those four nuts, but also on you axle bearings. You could damage the flanges on the end of the housing as well.

how hard is it to source 25 spline lsd centre's
to hard to find a wagon lsd and might just try this first.

Unsure. 25 spline was an option on N/As, but I doubt many would have chosen it. Alot of Ford S-pacs have the 25 spline LSDs.

If not that, 28 spline my friend.

yeah fair enough just thought i would give 25 spline a shot see how long it lasts. might have a sus around for one
and im not to keen on buying a lsd cos it could be stuffed so would prefer to get one built but its pricey.

Question

Will an R31 LSD diff, whole housing, fit onto my VL N/A, as in do all the mounts mount to the chassis and does the tail shaft bolt straight on to the R31 diff?

Mind you i already have the components for rear disc brakes as they are already been done.

No, diff housings utilise different mounting points. The axles can't be used in a VL housing either, as they're different lengths, and only four stud anyway.

Thankyou for finding your way to the diff thread.

You can use any BorgWarner 78 series LSD. A list of cars these are found in is provided at the start of the thread.

You need to make sure you have the same spline axles as the centre you've chosen.

That's ok, that's why I've created this thread.

Both of those LSDs will fit in your NA 25 spline diff. You simply remove the diff cover, remove the axles, remove the old centre, remove your 3.9 ring gear from the old centre, bolt it on to the new centre, install the new centre into the housing, reinstall the axles and diff cover, top it up with LSD diff oil, and you're done.

Those eBay links don't state if the centres are new or reconditioned, so when you drive them they may not twin spin often or at all.

VN-VT series 1 V6/V8 (excluding HSV) come with 3.08:1 standard. I would recommend 3.45:1 as a good compromise between upgrade and streetability. It's up to you how far you want to go; the higher the ratio, the greater the acceleration, but higher the rpm at cruising speed.

Check the link below to try common BW78 ratios (3.08:1, 3.45:1, 3.7:1, 3.89:1, 3.9:1, 4.11:1) against your top gear for cruising RPM:

If my axle has a bit of play on the rear left after installing a spool & is making an intermittant squeeking sound, is it possible I have bent the outer bearing retainer cup using a backwards rim to remove the axle? I think it might be rubbing on the dust cover but havent had a chance to pull the axle out to check it all out.

Also forgot to mention it goes away when braking

Ive just read 5 pages of diff discussion mr 5spd, nice work.
Two things i still want to know...
a) Ive heard that 3.7 borg warner gears can also be found in cortinas, true?
b) I want to put a LSD in my 25 spline n/a.
Can i get a list of bolt-out, bolt-in donor cars that i need to be looking out for?
Obviosuly n/a VLs where optioned, but what else?

Exactly the same. Either something is still bolted up, or it's just tight. Try jiggling, or turning one axle while someone puts some resistance on the other.

Sure the squeaking sound isn't only when turning at low speeds jbones?

Not sure about Ford Cortinas FLY-03L, don't know anything about them. Cars with BW78 are listed on the first page.

I noticed you said in your first post that axle bearings and seals are different drum to disc. This is only half true, axle bearings are the same drum and disc it's only the seal that differs same also applies for the 28 spline axle, 25 and 28's run the same bearing.

You are right, however the bearing has to come off to replace the seal anyway.
