This thread makes me want to go riding.

Maybe because I love the violent as hell power delivery of a turbo 6 is why I like two strokes,

4 strokes are like the v8 version

Turbo 6 FTW

Funny how every reckons the 2 strokes go harder. Friend & I had a standing start. He was riding the 2002 CR500R & I was riding the 2005 CRF450R. We were bar to bar all the way. NO difference. Except mine had a head start being a four stroke & quicker off the line plus 50cc less. Work that out.
Also when we go riding we would swap bikes. Within 5 minutes I wanted the CRF back. Way more fun. Instant power & allways having to sit on the petrol cap because all it wants to do is mono. Also there's allways grip being a smother/broader power band. Great for the bush & for those nasty rocky hills.

Has he got the cr250 frame with a cr500 engine? You realize are comparing an engine that started in 84 and finished in 98.. Some of them didn't even use power valves so even tho they are a wicked engine they are old tech.

I have let four stroke riders ride my yz250 before and wanted to get off because it was too snappy and wore them out too quick, when I hop on the tractors they are still powerfull as hell but I prefer bulk power in the mid to top end rather then smooth power all the way through.

No he has a Honda CR500R 2002 model.

There's is a difference between your standard four-stroke & a four-stroke race bike. The CRF450R goes way harder than the CRF450X. It rev's out harder with more kilo wasps. I've had many two-strokes. But once I brought the CRF450R it was way more fun.
It's funny. Here's me powering up the hills in the bush & my mates on the two-strokes are spinning all the way with there legs trailing behind. lol
2010 CRF450R efi
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gGyG9gT8YQ
CRF450R vs CR500R Allways there CRF450R would win of the start line but the CR500R had the top end & would win with the speed.
That's why in competition they went with the 4-strokes. Better response & quicker off the line.

Oh yeah it was 02 when they stopped hey, Alot of the power on those bikes in unusable they are monsters

I have an 11oz flywheel weight on my yz250 & a 52 tooth rear sprocket, its not as violent and better suited for the tight stuff & hills, it just smoothed out the initial band hit but you don't notice any top end loss & takes less then an hour to change them but I never have. Its a good idea as MX 2 strokes are a bit full on if trails is all you ride.

Since the four strokes are taking over I bought a flogged out YZ 250 two stroke to rebuild, still love the noise and power curve, should be good.

I think stock for stock the 4 strokes have the advantage but ive got a 2001 CR250R that I bought from a guy who runs the bike dyno in town and he'd spent a fair bit of time getting all the jetting right, has heaps of low down power for a 2 stroke. I have not come across a 4 stroke anywhere that beats me in a straight line drag race. Always pulls away from any 450 I have raced both standing start and roll on and thats 200cc less not 50 more...

There is one guy I know with a full race setup YZ450 that goes bar to bar with mine, they're so close it really comes down to the rider and how good of a launch you get. We ran them over and over and you couldn't get more even.

I'd say theres a fair chance your mates CR500 isnt running to full potential especially if you're swapping bikes and asking for ya 450 back within minutes cause the CR500 doesnt have you sittin on the petrol tank trying to hold it down... 2 stroke 500's are scary as **** when setup properly but if the jetting is not right its not going to perform. I wouldnt judge all 500 2 strokes on that one bike. The new Service Honda CR500's are mint!

Dont get me wrong tho im not a 4 stroke hater by any means haha the new 4 strokes are awesome, really usable power! I think the dude saying its like a turbo 6 and an 8 is a spot on comparison. If you wanna compare em head to head it really comes down to the bike in question, how well its setup/tuned and who's riding it not whether its a 4 stroke or a 2 stroke cause they both definitely have there advantages.

I wouldnt mind the new service honda 2010 Stealth 500AFX, sick bike but there pretty expensive by the time you get it to oz dont think they make them locally!

http://www.servicehonda.com/custom-bike-gallery

Heres mine, it's been awesome bang for buck only cost around 3 grand. been meaning to get a new seat, dude I bought it off used it for fmx.

Before anyone says two strokes are better has anyone ridden a 4 banger. The reason I didn't like the CR500 was because it felt like sh!t. The hole seat & weight thing was wrong and your saying a 250cc two stroke would beat a 450 race bike. M8 you must have stones in your head. lol. I haven't had any 2 stroke beat me yet.

Ive ridden plenty of 4 strokes, there great and stock vs stock i think they do have an edge especially in an average riders hands. The CR500 you rode is from the old breed its actually more like 15 years old in terms of frame/suspension etc. Have a read of this, its pretty much a shootout between your bike and your mates bike of which they all claim the 500 is faster and more explosive but with **** handling using 92 model frame/suspension: 08 CRF450 vs 01 CR500 shootout. The new Service Honda 500AF's however use the latest CRF250 frame/suspension etc but with a 500 2 stroke engine, they are an awesome machine.

Take a look at the AMA Championship list it was dominated by 250 2 strokes from the beginning all the way up till 2006 and that is when all the top guys stopped using 2 strokes and the teams switched to the new breed of 4 strokes because they're easier to ride reliably fast lap times with the power being much smoother and more predictable. James Stewart actually won a bunch of motos around 2006 on a KX250 against the other top guys who had switched to 450's before he made the jump as well. The 2 stroke 250's might take more skill to put down the same lap time but don't count them out in terms of sheer acceleration when setup properly. Wikipedia lists the 2001 CR250R as being regarded as the best 2 stroke MX bike of all time. I dont see how its so hard to believe its every bit as fast and faster than all the 450's I ride with considering its highly modified and has been dyno'd with correct AF's for where I live.

If you think your 450 can flog any 2 stroke 500 you're the one with rocks in ya head mate

I seem to do alright without reverse, plus some of the crap I have turned my bike around on reverse wouldn't do a thing.

Q:AND THE POWERBAND WINNER IS…
A:Need you ask? The CRF450 wins the overall powerband category.

Yeah, because it is smoother and easier to ride for noobs.

Q:WHICH ONE MAKES THE MOST POWER?
A:Stock for stock there is no comparison—the CR500 two-stroke pumps out approximately 55 horsepower, to the 50 horsepower of the CRF450. If you doubt those numbers, you will be convinced by turning the throttle wide open on both bikes. The CR500 explodes, while the CRF450 churns its way forward. In a test of sheer power, the CR500 wins.

And that is virtually a 1992 model CR500 they're comparing with the 2008 CRF450, not the 500AF they're producing now which uses the same frame/suspension as the latest 450's but with even more power again and a more usable powerband.

In terms of raw power its no contest mate, you're dreaming if you think otherwise.

Next thing your going to say that the CR500 rev's harder or higher lol. Also you'll be saying a two stroke is better for the bush. It's all about putting the power to use. Who won the blue light rally where I live. A four stroke. With over a 1000 riders of two & four strokes. A four stroke won. Well I be dammed.
