I have an 86 VL. It was made in Jun/July Cant remember the exact month, i will check tomorrow and edit.

But anyway, i have a sticker on inside of the drivers door frame that says something along the lines of

86 VL COMMODORE
FIELD TEST
Then It has a number
and "DO NOT REMOVE"

i was wondering if this is on every VL (i've checked on a couple of mates' cars and they dont have it and i was wondering if it was because they werent ever put there, or because they have simply fallen off.

It was to do with a recall type issue.
I've owned many VLTs with the same sticker

not happy, but could be worse, couldv said non tubo.

For the letter specifying the year refers to model year and it does not line up with the calender year. I believe that Oct-Sep is how the model year works.

304's started midway through the VK series in order to homologate the Commodore for International Group A racing in the under 5L category where they scored a nice weight saving for losing 4 cubic inches.

on my rego papers it says my cars year is 1987 and yet on the vin calculator it says

Your car is a Holden Calais Sedan
From the factory it was equipped with the Turbocharged Nissan 3L RB30ET producing 150kw at the flywheel.
It was produced in 1988 at the Adelaide plant with a serial number of 57895

does that just mean that the cars body was made in 1987 but it didnt leave the factory till 1988?
