VL Turbo basic modifications and power expectations

New to www.calaisturbo.com.au? Want a rough idea on what mods can be done and for how many dollars? Read on.....

VL Turbo's are relatively easy to gain power upgrades with minimal cost and effort. If you are new to the VL Turbo scene here are a few modifications you should look at and the power range you will achieve. Note, these are rough estimates only. Performing modifications does not guarantee power rating. Every dyno will read differently, the best and most accurate way or measuring power is on the quarter mile.

Basic Modifications:
- 3 Inch exhaust from turbo back
- Front mount Intercooler
- Adjustable boost control
- K & N Panel filter

You will be looking at about the $1000 mark for something like this. It is always recomended when increasing boost levels past factory levels to have the car put on a dyno to check Air : Fuel ratios.

Further modifications for power in the 200 rwKw – 230rwKw range
- Aftermarket ECU example link or microtech to remove AFM.
- Larger injectors for example 444cc up to 600cc
- Highflow T3/T4 turbo
- Larger fuel pump like a 984 or 044
- TX1/TX2 cam shaft upgrade

You will be looking at around the $2500 mark. Prices indicative of parts only not labor. For Labor prices you are best advised to contact your local workshop for an accurate quote.

250rwKw + Range
- Aftermarket ECU for example microtech, motec, Vipec, Link ect
- GT35/40 turbo
- Port and Polish head
- TX2 cam as minimum (or equivalent)
- Rebuild bottom end if needed with forged pistons.
- Surge tank and 044 pump
- 600cc injectors as minimum
- Adjustable fuel regulator
- Appropriate gearbox to suit (Auto manualised ect, Manual with HD+ Clutch)
- Rebuilt VL Turbo diff

Price will range anywhere from $6000-$12000 depending on new or used parts. The gearbox will be your most expensive item if you are wanting a built auto. They range around $3500-$5000 for the box, converter and tail shaft.

Obviously costs are rough only, you will be able to do it more cheaply using second hand parts and doing your own labor. Always remember though, the poor man pays twice!

If anyone has any suggestions to add to this post feel free to add them below.

The K&N filter by itself wouldnt do much, you really need to open up the air box or go through the guard with a hole saw.

and remember don't deal with dodgy people!

this is a good guide that can be referred to and read in like a minute or so, should stop threads from being made...

As it says above Ank, feel free to post up more info and we will add it to the thread.

This is a quick refference thread to stop all the threads asking "How much power will my highflow make?" ect, but feel free to add.

best car to look at for bang for buck is mkdjet berlina turbo

head has not even been off the car !! they removed the engine mount bolts and jacket the car up to change the cam!!! (jacking the car up lets the cam clear the rad support)

i will post up a detailed thread on bang for buck very soon the motor is at the engine builders now but the build is at 6k at the moment including purches of car AND 3 speed KEAS jatco(og paul from keas)

some basic stats on the car are ltx10, 1000cc 2x044 custom wade cam (1147 but changed slightly) also had to buy a 28 spline lsd billet fuel rail

aiming for 10's with the car

Turbo ECU + Injectors
GKteck front mount cooler

This thread is for reference as a guide for new comers to VL turbo's and RB30 engines, not a 'how much power will I make?' thread.

They have identical internals so your claim is void.

If anyone has any suggestions to add to this post feel free to add them below.

I have the basic mods 3inch dump from the turbo (removed that sh*t wastegate setup) 3 inch exhaust hiflow cat and one muffler at the rear near the tank, i have a standard turbo with an intercooler running 2.5inch into the cooler and 3inch out back to the throttle body. motor is a na motor with a acl copper head gasket standard squash plus 1.6mm for decomp, im still running a na computer, i have got a set of 450cc injectors and a ebay adjustable fuel reg, im running a r33 skyline box (the na ones just didnt last for some reason) port and polish (home job) and i havent had it dynoed tuned or anything yet i have just been playing around with it myself, and the car has currently ran a 13.2 @106mph on 9PSI(with heaps of wheelspin) at willowbank a couple of weeks ago all up the mods on this car including doing the turbo conversion is rougly at the 1200 mark some parts i have done barter exchange (welding for parts) like my gear box and cooler, other things i have used mandrel bent exhaust pipe for my cooler piping basically everything on this car i have done myself in my shed at home the car has never seen a workshop since i have owned the car, there are cheap options out there if you can tinker with it and if you can get the right info to help. im currently starting to play around with water injection so i can wind the boost up to 15psi and throw some slicks on and see if i can break into something around the 12.5 mark, i know people will laugh and say you cant do it but who whould have thought that 5 years ago vls would be doing 8.7sec passes

Ps playing around with your cam timing can make so much difference to your combo one or two teeth can make the difference between gaining and loosing power

This!
I'm doing my own exhaust combination, and there's still no way I could get under that figure of $1000.
