What are we missing?
Hey guys, i have just fitted up a Gas research and top mount turbo set up into my GQ Nissan Patrol.
We have it running, but it wont rev past about 2,000 rpm. After that, it seems to run out of gas. |

I just finished converting a TB42 Carb to an Injected and then turbo'd it using the stock VL/R31 ECU so I'm fairly familiar with almost every possible issue you could have and error codes.
Turn the ECU dial to clockwise to the end which is about (5 O'clock) and the ECU should start flashing codes using the lights inside the oval shaped hole. red is x10 and green is x1. so 2 red then 3 green is code 23. It usually lists several codes and some are normal like:14,23,24,31,44. some are not like: 11,12,13,21,22. I'm expecting you will see 12 for the MAF which is not connected or stuffed. Of course its running fart gas I'll take it all the back.. no idea in that case. I'm not familiar with their kit.

Ok, so the ignition spark is managed by the original distributor and points.
The throttle is choked not opening past a few millimetres or so or the main jet may need adjustment for a higher max flow rate to allow more fuel flow. If the engine back fires, be careful it could cause airbox or piping to blow up or off the engine. Best ask the OEM to assist with setting up. sorry I don't think I can help much further on this one.

I can probably help you. I'm running an rb30 straight gas research turbo setup on my GQ too. Firstly if your running the rb30s dizzy it is not a points system. It is an amplified magnetic pickup with the curve built into the dizzy via weights and a vac advance diaphragm.
I find that running the timing at about 21-24 degrees BTDC is good with my setup and the stock curve in the dizzy. Do you have an afr/lambda gauge? It will indicate weather you have enough fuel or too much. Also you have to check if the converter you have has the up rated springs in the primary diaphragm from gas research. Gas research throttle bodies operate a about 5psi and the standard B2 operates at about 2psi. This could be why its starving of gas. ![]() |
