N/A to VLT - Piece by Piece list

Hey Guys,

I know this has been done to death, and as a former post whore i'm one to close some of the threads down but can we please get someone with some time to sit down and do up a list of every part needed... not what you think, but facts.

Once we get something together email it to robert@urbanmedia.com.au and i will put it all in here and sticky it. I can even send it to Sin to possibly do an article...

Carcrazy or OVL087 you up for it??

Also, is this thread intended to just list the differences or what is actually needed for the conversion? cause they are 2 different things.

Yeah sorry Luke, by the conversion i meant taking an RB30E and bolting the turbo on... i didn't think you would have to go to the extent of pistons, rings, and so on.

Did MadHatter offer to do this?

ok these are the bits needed for a dodgy conversion that will work well

ECU
injectors
crossover pipe
air flow meter to turbo ducting metal & plastic piping
detonation sensor & wiring
exhaust manifold
turbocharger
dump pipe & exhaust
oil & water lines for turbocharger


*oil pump will work sufficiently
*decompression plate is reccommended for any decent boost level
*camshaft is not necessary
*intake plenum is not necessary and some people beleive na is better
*N/A manual box is a lot weaker than the turbo manual
*N/A auto is only marginally weaker than turbo auto, could hold up well with a dcent cooler
*brakes will need upgrading, best to go better than VLT if you gotta change anyway
*two pinion, 25 spline diff will hold up quite well but obviously is not as strong as the turbo 4 pinion 28 spline one
*heat sheilds not necessary but were there for a reason

ps. this is just my experiences from several people i know who have done conversions

Yeah that'd be cool Andy... just interested in how much f**king around would be involved with it for now... i don't want to have to pull the whole car apart to do it.

I'm not looking for something thats gonna run 11's i just want a little bit of boost at say 6 to 10 pound (10 pound is max that an N/A base will handle isn't it?)

Luke, when you say the auto will hold up well with a decent cooler are you refering to the trans cooler or an intercooler in general?

Secondly, can we get some rough pricing ranges people should be looking at for each individual part?

Do turbos come with a trans cooler stock on the autos?
Someone was also discussing a while back that some n/a's have them if you had the tow pack... (can't confirm that )

yeah tranny cooler, i had a mate run his for years before melting gearbox, it now cant get out of his driveway
they were not stock on the VLT, used the in-radiator cooler unless optioned with tow pack

i believe it was a tow pack option - my n/a calais came with a tranny cooler from factory - glad it did, cause now i got the turbo g/box in there with a high stall, gotta make sure its not gonna have a melt down on me..

Yeah 11-13psi is about the max of the fuel system. But without cooler 9psi would be the max ( with retarded timing ) on 98RON.

Add a cooler and a larger fuel pump ( maybe play with fuel pressure ) u will be able to extract more power and be able to run higher boost

Does anyone have part numbers, or places off supply where I could find the little banjo bolts needed to secure the oil lines from a T3 to the engine block? Also water lines + T piece needed for water lines?

as for cost add it up
shouldnt be too bad if you get some bits cheap
this is what i have seen some parts go for as an example
ECU $150
injectors $200
crossover pipe $80
air flow meter to turbo ducting metal & plastic piping $100
detonation sensor & wiring $50 (get from NZ)
exhaust manifold $150
turbocharger $500
dump pipe & exhaust $600 (proper exhaust)
oil & water lines for turbocharger ???????????

Series 1 Turbo Conversion

Has anyone done an N/A to Turbo conversion with the Series 1 Engine? I hear that it is quite a pain in the ass compared to the Series 2? :?
