Looks like Harrop now stock a fairly extensive range of Holden applicable diffs, in various splines; including VL/BW78 28 and 31 spline!

Because people post in one section or the other, and miss the thread. This way at least they're in similar threads.

BTW weight of a full house BW78 is probably 70Kg; I can lift one and I'm by no means big. If I ever get the chance I will weigh a few varities and update the first post.

Also when you spin the shaft both wheels spin at once but he said when he went around corners it would screech so im really hoping its not locked. although it apparently has 4.11 gears but i doubt it does.
Sounds like a textbook spooled diff - screech on corners and 4.11:1s. Only really worth anything if it has 28 spline axles.

3.45s bud it's on the first page

Quote:
Across the VL range, LSDs and disc brakes were optional (not restricted to being present only on turbo or V8 models).
For example:

Calais - 3.45 gears, 2 pinion center, 25 spline axles, disc brakes, LSD Optional
V8 VL's were able to optioned with the same 4 pinion 28 spline LSD centres, running the same disc brakes, however they were equipped with 3.08 ratio gears to improve fuel economy (it was also possible to option these diffs with the higher ratio 3.45 gears). The handbrake cable differs between disc brake and drum brake diffs.

None of the parts alter the length of the axle.

I would imagine your supplier would know, and they'd have a listing......

Otherwise someone will pipe up with the sizes soon. I haven't got them.

I have a diff in my VLT that came from the wreckers as a VL V8 28 spline diff. The gearing feels a bit low for my R33 5 speed. How can I tell if this has a 3.08 centre or th 3.45 centre. It certainly feels like a 3.08. the car has 205/65/15s on it and at 60ks in 4th gear it is at 1400 rpm. Cheers.

Jack it up put a white line on pinion and another line on the wheel turn the pinion and count the number of times the pinion turns if 3.08 ratio it'll turn 3 n fraction times to one rotation of the wheel if 3.45 it'll turn nearly 3.5 turns to one turn of the wheel... or alternativly you could take the cover plate off the centre and it'll be stamped on the crownwheel

Use the calculators on the first page of the thread, or remove the cover and check the stamp. Good opportunity to change the oil this way.

Yes, as long as they both have the same number of splines.

No. VN axles are longer than VL axles, and won't fit in the housing. You'll need standard VL 25 spline axles, with the oil seals changed to suit disc brakes (you will have to fit new bearings at the same time).

By "all this stuff" I assumed he meant axles too. As in, centre plus axles for matching splines.

Do VL 25 spline axles have 931 and 932 stamped on hub of axle? I know VL 28 spline axles have 950 and 951 but thought if the above was found out, it saves pulling out axles and measuring. It took 4 different people claiming they had a VLT diff before i found one that wasnt the longer VN-VS. Another measurement to add is a VL disc brake diff is 131cm from disc backing plate to backing plate, VN-VS is closer to 136.
