the v8 and v6 vn rack body itself is the same you just have to change over the top housing where the hoses attach. in your case as calaisv8 said stick with the vl rack they are a lot more compact and make exhaust issues alot easier to overcome. the only good thing bout the vn v6 rack is that the input shaft is a bit further to the chassis rail and helps a bit. depends on what you want to do with your exhaust.
if you are starting with a 3l and do the conversion do you need an engineers report (in nsw) if you change to disc rear end and larger front discs? as well as front and rear v8 springs? Last edited by gamble; 06-10-08 at 18:58. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

how goin guys... currently have reco'd a vn v8 k-frame and bolted that in. Now i'm ready to drop the motor and box in ( i have a t700), i was hoping som1 could tell me exactly which part of the floor needs to be knocked in to allow fitment of the gearbox. Is it the actual gear tunnel floor or the area up near the firewall where the bellhousing locates, and how far in do i actually knok away? i'm hoping to drop motor and box in the same time and save myself the hassel... any ideas... hopefully do the conversion this arvo or 2morrow.
another qn: if you use the conversion crossmember for a t5 in a vk, would that be the same for a vl? would that bolt up the same for a t700? ive also used a vn v8 rack. so i'll let u guys know if i come across any problems also the gearbox selector lever is on the opposite side (passengers) on the turbo700 as opposed to the vl jatco which is on the drivers side... how do i get around this problem... is there a linkage i need to make up? the chassis is the same from vb-vl so the t5 mount will work on the vl but i dont think it'll bolt up to the auto.
Now for my question will a vn th700 gearbox mount bolt straight into a vl? Apart from the speedo drive thi is the only issue i have if you start with a 6cyl vl. |

vl 355 conversion
gday guys just about finished this conversion into my original 5lt carbie vl.
just needing some info on fuel side of things. just wandering if the fuel sender unit's are the same or different between vl 6's and 8's. also if anyone else who has done the conversion just wandering if they had any problems fitting the bonnet on when using the vl k-frame instead of the vn. cheers guys. |

heres a bit of info for anyone doing the conversion;
incase anyone was thinking of buying the CRS X-member to fit a turbo 350/400 into a VL keep this in mind. you will need to modify it to clear the chassis rail ; ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() i bought the above yrs ago, but apparently you can use the standard trimatic xmember? not sure how true that is though. ive seen alot of ppl ask about where you need to 'massage' the tunnel to clear the larger turbo XXX auto's. i have a turbo 350 so this may differ to the 400/700's. here are the areas that need some bashing! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() this part doesnt hit but is Very close! ![]() i have used PH5700 (larger pipes) headers from Pacemaker, they say these dont fit VL. The only reason why they wouldnt fit is if you are running power stearing. Just for the hell of it i tried fitting them with a power steering rack in and there is No Way they will fit! chucked in my manual steering rack and clears fine. see pics for rack differences; ![]() ![]() ![]() obvious space difference! |

so what do u do when u finish the conversion.....
go tell vicroads / Rta that u have another engine in it... what do they ask for when u give them the engine numbers?? when i asked them about a friend seizing his engine and having to put another one in, they said all they need is a reciept from where you got the engine with the numbers on it and all is fine, they put it in their system.. but i didnt ask em what if u go from a 6cylinder turbo/non turbz to a 5ltr....?? what will happen? what will u need to do?

Youll need the receipt and they will ask who installed it. If its you just tell them that.
Depending on who checks they will just check engine number while the smarter inspector will check all of the things you're supposed to have like cats and emission gear. |

not sure how 2 post pics,..
theres a brass regulator at the front of the manifold where the cover sits on the drivers side, it has a large heater hose that goes to it, then at the bottom of the reg theres like a 4mm outlet for a hose... where is that hose meant to go?? |

this is the heater control valve, theres meant to be a vaccum line off that but where is it meant to go now? some early pics of the conversion of mine can be found here. i'll put some new ones up soon with the finished product http://s688.photobucket.com/albums/vv243/korayzi/ Last edited by YBJLS4; 06-05-09 at 20:30.
