Alsynonís prize winning Commodore!

Hey everyone, I finally got off my lazy butt (now that I am back from a work trip OS) and have taken some photos of my car and the awesome prizes that I scored in the 2006 memberís raffle (to all you players youíve got to be in it to win it).

Once again Iíd like to publicly thank the advertisers that offered the 2006 members raffle prizes, Kyle Ė 6Boost, Jamie Ė JD Custom Plenums, Simon Ė Injectors Online and Greg Ė GKTech.

All the prizes together.

Kyleís RB30 low mount manifold with the super sexy merge collector, quicker spool and more power.

Jamieís RB30 highly polished Plenum, more low down torque and more power.

Simonís RB30 fuel rail, allowing the use of 14mm o-ring injectors for more choice and hassle free fitting.

Gregís no holes intercooler kit for sleeper style and defect free driving.

Now onto the details of the heap that it is getting put intoÖ.

Itís a 1988 VL Turbo Sedan (Factory) which I bought in Feb 93 as a tow hack for my race bikes. I ultimately had a choice between 3 cars, a blue VLCT manual (90,000kms $23K), an 86 Mustang Convertible ($24K) and this one a VLT SL manual (48,000kms $18K). Only one of them had a towbar so this is the one that I bought.

I lasted until April before I wound the boost up with a bleeder valve, total cost of $10 including fuel to go and get the parts, and thrashed it around for a year before I decided that it may need some extra fuel. I had 2 options one was a MOTEC which was about $6K fitted in those days and the other was to add some extra injectors which was about $120. About a year after fitting the extra injectors, the turbo became unbalanced at full song and needless to say it destroyed itself in the time it took to lift off. I had the turbo rebuilt (high flowed) and had an intercooler fitted. The intercooler cost a massive $1600 and its dimensions were 300 x 175 x 76 and it fitted neatly between the headlights. This allowed me to wind up the boost to 16psi and gave me the power to run mid 12ís all day which was pretty quick back in í95. This is basically how it has stayed since then. In 2005 I put a larger cooler in, fitted HKS electronic boost control and replaced the valve stem seals. It still has the same turbo 300,000kms later and this is really starting to show as it can only manage 13psi now.

Model: Ď88 VL SL Turbo

Current Engine Mods : Intercooler, 2 Extra Injectors, Cold Air Induction, 13PSI (All that the turbo can give)

Power : More than Gavinís (by around 2kw on a 45 degree dyno day)

Exhaust : 3" Turbo back

Gearbox : MX7

Diff : BW LSD with 3.91's from a S3 Skyline

Brakes : Stock

Suspension : Pedders springs Front, Kings SL Rear, Pedders Shocks all round, Adjustable Panhard Rod, Strut Brace.

Wheels/Tyres : 15x7 with 205/65 - 235/60 or 17 x 8 with 235/45

Interior : Stock with added kiddie seats

Other Mods : VS Statesman seats cut down but yet to be fitted.

Stereo : 1997 Vintage Panasonic CD

Cost : 18,000 when I bought it (48,000kms on the clock).

Future Mods Exterior: Get a pro to repaint it at some stage....(any painters in SA looking for a cashy?). Fit manual steering rack.

Future Mods Interior: Fit my cut-down VS Stato seats.

Future Mods Engine: Basically fit all the items that are sitting on the "shelf of speed" the other items apart from the prizes are as follows: -
TIAL 44mm external waste gate,
Garrett GT3582R,
Tighe Cams custom VLT Grind,
Vernier cam gear,
Performance Springs valve springs,
Alcohol / water injection,
Duz360 catch can,
MSD CDI Ignition,
JD Customs cold side piping,
Gas Research straight gas setup with 2 tanks for extended range interstate cruising,
An old Haltech ECU and
All the associated niff-naff that goes with a major setup change.

What it looks like without having had a bath since Easter.

There's an intercooler and Cold Air Intake behind there.

The office.

Where the little people sit.

A couple of bits signed by PB.

The shelf of speed.

Actually starting the build this week and Iíll do my utmost to remember to take photos along the way. If all goes cunningly to plan and I donít spend too much time OS with work I may have this bad boy together and running by August but if all goes normally I may just get it back on the road come XmasÖhopefully 2007. Once again thanks to Kyle, Jamie, Simon and Greg for putting up the prizes.

"Prices for manifolds start at $800 and packages from $2500 including garrett GT style ball bearing turbo's. All manifolds come with a complete set of studs and nuts and turbocharger gasket... Manifolds are also sand blasted inside and out to improve the surface finish and ensure there is no scale or contaminants that may damage your turbocharger on startup. These are just SOME of the extra measures taken with your 6boost manifold to ensure you are recieving the best As they say, you get what you pay for, and experience and good knowledge is priceless;o)"

Yeah it was the free members raffle we ran last year.

A few of the sponsors got together with me and we organised it for all the loyal members. All they needed to do was say "i'm in" and they were entered in to win $3000 worth of stuff (as seen above).

Here's the old thread: http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/showthread.php?t=80741

We will have another later on this year, but instead of giving it all to the 1 winner, we'll try have 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc...

And again it will be free to members only.

I'm going to slightly modify and use the hot side piping that came with the GKTech kit and
use cold side piping which I am getting made by Jamie at JD Custom

Ta Wayno, the trip home was uneventful (only 2 "licence checks"), had too much to drink when I was in Melbourne, nothing like 3000kms in 3 days, I was happy Matt cancelled the SA cruise as it saved me making an excuse not to go.

Have already swapped out the power steering for manual, now all I need is TNT to deliver my Turbo so I can actually actually take it off the road and get serious about it.

Power steering out / manual rack in and battery to the boot in the last couple of days, also welded up / sealed the injector bungs on the manifold. Forgot to do photos, did a lot of swearing though. Nothing further is going to happen until the Turbo arrives...whenever that is going to be, the stuff that was sent with it at the same time arrived a week ago.....

Progress...or rather lack there-of to date....Turbo showed up, still waiting on the cold side piping, and the new daily is here.

The new daily is an '89 XF GLS 5spd Ute which is on gas, it cost me a carton of Cascade Light with rego, a full gas tank and absolutley no rust. It only requires a new motor (the one in it runs perfectly but has so much slop in the crank that it pumps out about a litre of oil out every 50kms...on the bright side this keeps the underneath of it "rustproofed"), 4 new tyres (read retreads), a new Vacuum lockoff and a LH tail-light, not bad for a grand total of about $350 for a very useful vehicle especially considering it is on gas. I plan on fitting all that to it this week and then get started on the dunnydore.

Definately not going to make C4CSA as even if miracles occur and the car is finished and tuned, I am going to be OS at the time....again.

Well weekend one on the build was great, got bugger all done between kids soccer, kids birthdays etc, had plans on having everything stripped off and cleaned, maybe even new fuse rail in, oh well. Only got as far as removing everything that was factory hanging off the engine, including cam, ecu, loom etc. Still have to get the petrol tank and lines out, may get to it during the week but highly unlikely as it is damn cold out in the shed after dark...stupid winter.

Ok, the updates...
All that has occurred in the last few weeks is: -
The new cam and valve springs have gone in;
The adjustable cam gear has gone on;
The front of the engine has been put back together;
2 Gas tanks have gone into the boot (yes the golf clubs still fit...just);
The whole petrol system has been removed;
The new inlet side has been dummy fitted and removed;
The new hot side has been dummy fitted and removed;
The new ECU has been wired in...(hope it doesn't let the smoke out and that it starts and stops the engine and that the dash still works and whatever else can go wrong with this damn auto sparkie stuff);
The fuse box has been rewired... (As above);
The new intercooler has been mounted;
Part of the C2H5OH injection is installed; and
A few bits and pieces received a cosmetic freshen up while I was avoiding the wiring.

If I was to take a pic, you'd think that I had done sweet FA...if all goes to plan I should have it on a tilt tray sometime next week to get the new dump and waste-gate pipes done.
