Don't stress grantos. You can keep your new 10" clutch.

I did. Even if it does touch a bit just put it in and start it up. It will soon make a clearing for itself.

It has come to my attention that r33 and mx7 box's have different oil capacities. (r33 =4L, MX7=2.4L). What inside the box affects oil capacity? I am looking into swapping over the mx7 and r33 bellhousings and as far as i can see they are identical. But if i am going to reduce the oil capacity by this changeover i am not going to even bother.

Prob just the filler plug height! I cant say i took any notice when i swapped mine.

The hose out of the box is just the breather, like so when the box heats up it doesn't pressurise The tag on the end of the hose goes on the bell bolt closest, so the tube sits up behind the engine with the opening pointing down.

I was told today that NISSAN recomends auto trans fluid for the r33 boxes. Wondering how true that is??? Any1 got a r33 owners manual in english???

The bellhousing on the MX7 is cast as one piece with the rest of the box

ye, but u can still pull it apart from the middle. About 8 bolts i think it was. I was thinking of swapping them over from that position.

I also checked the positions of the plugs because i had thought of that b4 hand and they are in the same spots.

Its been too hot and humid here lately so i havent been out to the garage to try it out yet, lol.

Just wondering how much these r33 boxes go for as my mate has one sitting in his garage after a manual conversion on his r33.

I dont think he realises they're pretty valuable.

Would you get one for $1500?

shop around you will find em right down to about $1200, find someone who has wrecked (stacked) a skyline and you could get one even cheaper, as Hilly did for his boostedwagon, he got his for Sweet FA! $800 or something.

Nissan says in the r33 owners manual that the oil capacity of the rb25det box is 2.8L, but yet it takes about 3.5L when you fill it up to the level of the drain??? can you harm the box by overfilling it? Just paid 110 for oil and don't want to waste it...

R33 gearboxes are the latest fad, a few years ago no one had em, they were plentiful, people were scared to put anything other than an MX7 in thier VL so they were cheap.
Once people discovered how simple the upgrade was, they went up in price.
What this will mean is, MX7's should now become a bit more realistically priced.

mx7 are a **** box coz to rebuild them costs a small fortune. The parts are becoming increasingly difficult to buy and will eventually end up like the aussie fourspeed.
as for overfilling a box it will not do any damage as the more oil the bigger the cooling capacity BUT dont fill it completely otherwise it will pressurise the box and could possibly crack the housing.

i still think r33 boxes are, although expensive, the best option financially at the moment. Almost the same price as an mx7 but morepsi is right this has got to push the price of mx7's down.

Its like if the XR6T came down in price to 15k, vlct's arn't still going to be worth 12k are they...

put my box in yesterday. few things to note:
1) 10" flywheel does NOT fit without machining bellhousing
2) GB took about 3.5L
3) Clutch lines doen ot go directly into slave, put factory skyline's have a little 4" rubber hose out of the slave, the vl line DOES fit into the end of that one.
4) MX7 starter motor fit's with the NA sandwitch plate and 10" flywheel

My box came from a S1 94 r33, maybe they changed them in the s2 and s3.

HAHA, lets all just agree that there must be some differences in the castings or something as some DO and some DONT! i am using a 10" flywheel and it fitted perfect, the actual pressure plate on the clutch ground its own relief but! Tempest, did you end up using the vlt (10") clutch and flywheel? Ifso, what throwout bearing carrier did u use? Im still havent found out if i need to machine my r33 carrier.

well i used the 9.5" as i got a better (stronger) clutch for a better price verses the 10" one.
