VL NA Auto box slipping, what should l do?

I have a VL Calais S2 NA Auto

I think my gearbox is on its way out, it seems to slip when trying to reverse up anything with a bit of an angle, (can only reverse on a flat surface) and sometimes when in overdrive it seems to slip occasionally...

I've always wanted a 5spd manual, so what are my options?
would it be best to get the auto repaired?
do a whole conversion to a manual 5spd?
what 5spd box should i get?
where is a good place to go in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne?

can i cause any harm to anything else if the box is slipping? or when it is starting to slip should i stop striaght away or just keep going (when in reverse)?

thanks for your help

if you decide to get the auto fixed and are in the lillydale area, go to lillydale automatics, they did a very good job of fixing mine after another shop tried their best to destroy it.........

but if you really want a 5 speed, go the conversion.

if they reccoment a rebuild, dont bother.
spend $200-$300 on a seconhand auto, or put in a 5spd. a conversion will set you back $800-$1000.

Rebuilt auto will be $1200-$1600 so i'd only do it if you really liked auto VL's.

I just rang Yarra Valley Automatic Transmission Specialists, and they said that most likely the clutches have gone inside the box, and to get them replaced would cost $800

I asked about a 2nd hand box and he said, its not worth it, could have the same problems or worse....

yes well that is the risk you take. and of course an auto place will say that, they want your money!!

a COMPLETE rebuild is about $600-$800 in parts and the rest is labour.

most wreckers will offer a warranty on the seconhand auto. fit it asap, fill it with new fluid and adjust the bands. if it works fine it'll probably last a while. if you're game you can rebuild the valve body too as a lot of crap gets in them and that can make a huge difference.

i should be going 5spd soon so if u want my old n/a auto you can have it for a very cheap price

yeah its an n/a auto. this auto has only been in about 2 months. it seems fine but i'd be guessing its not a low km box. i rebuilt the valve body and serviced it and its been fine the whole time i've had it though.
