Paint Question for the VLT gurus...

Hi everyone, I'm about to restore my Calais Turbo however i wasn't sure of the following... does anyone know why some VL's had black floor boots and some had coloured? Was it a series 1 or 2 thing? Any help would be appreciated.

Iíve noticed more Calais with black boots than sl/berlinas over the years. Not sure if this is just coincidence or if it means something

Thanks for your input guys. Still stumped if it's meant to be black or coloured.

From memory the black boot floored cars are Melbourne built.

I reckon you'll find it's Adelaide-built cars that have the black boots Oliver.
Adelaide was the only plant that built the Calais, which is strangely the only car that didn't really need a blackened boot as the carpet linings covered everything they'd have painted black. You'll also notice it fades out as time went on. 1986 cars are pretty well covered, but into 1988 any area covered by carpeting was left un-blackened, including boot floors. A minute paint saving measure perhaps? This might also explain why some people say they have a late Calais without any black at all though I'm not really up to speed on Calais sedan weirdnesses.

So is it safe to say Adelaide assembled cars had black floor boots and Melbourne had coloured?

Also just had a look at my white Calais turbo, it's Adelaide built, never been painted, it's got a white boot!

Boot colour

I can confirm my boot is black in my 1987 VL calais but that doesn't help much as my car is factory black duco as well
