The boot will be flat all the way to the back seat. Perspective wise it would appear bigger than what it is. Most importantly it will fit 2 suitcases and bags if required or my boogie board and beach stuff. This has to be a practical boot.

Grills strong enough to take weight. We've tested it and there's enough clearance to not damage them. Also grills are removable to carefully vacuum the cone if ever required ie. sand. I really wanted the subs to take an inconspicuous look in the boot. This should be a boot first and foremost.

You'll have to make do with the upcoming Motorvation DVD for the time being. If they ever hold Nationals for VL I will make the journey.

In the future, I will be shipping the car to the UK for a 3 month drive tour around Europe taking photos of the car against historic and popular landmarks. But that is waaaaaaay in the future.

Love it! Pretty sure Wheels or someone did something very similar with a VL of sorts back in the day - you've probably seen it. From memory one of the photos is of the Commodore at the Arc De Triomphe in France. Would be awesome to find the story and try to re-create the pics with your own car.

Boot Progress

As you can see, the boot is coming along fine....

All up after a number of previous attempts by idiots over the past 8 years, I finally see my original vision being created.

More progress

Carpeting around the edges complete and suddenly I'm not too crazy about the wheel cover. What do you think? Should I leave it off?

Pics from the same angle with wheel cover on/off? I think I like it better off but not 100%

I'll post more pics when we've progressed a bit more with the carpeting but all up, on or off it's an easy thing to do. The cover has already been made up so I either leave it at home or put it on. Stay tuned. Updates later today. Also positioning LEDs around the boot too similar to European cars. I reckon that will make a difference too.

Btw. Things also done for today COB include;
- front parking sensors and switch connected
- green LEDs to replace cruise control and speed alert switches so the deep green matches the boost gauge colour

Would Holden have put the cover on or left it off were it built in 2012?

Yup. Thought the same thing. But I'm thinking mid eighties. Calais had the flimsy wheel covers. I've got the cover made up anyway but if I need slightly more space then it's cover off. Will post pics of both.

LED Install

Commenced connecting up the LEDs.

If you're wondering that section that covers the lights is easily removable for access to the globes.[COLOR="Silver"]

---------- Post added 06-01-12 at 11:46 ----------

All sides now carpeted. Just the floor to do now.

Still mucking about with LEDs.

The following is the panel that sits under the rear parcel shelf. We're just about to put the panel back in. There's an issue with the boot light switch and power at the moment which we're trying to sort.

Just sits in normal. We made a tool chest in there too including a first aid kit.

In building materials we used a lot lighter but sturdier materials and the speakers are lighter too. The whole boot is held together with 4 screws and the rest fits tightly together with "smart" joins. It's taken a month alone to design and put that boot together. But I wanted something with a European feel. I didn't feel that the boots in the 80s were all that inspiring so this is the only part of my project I've slightly deviated from my project brief. I could close the boot lid and no one would be the wiser.

---------- Post added 11-01-12 at 16:34 ----------

Boot 99% Done

Ok I'm being picky but I just love the boot. The month we spent on it was well worth it!

I reckon I still need a smaller safety triangle on the boot underside. But it's all semantics.

---------- Post added 12-01-12 at 01:36 ----------

Car was detailed today and am quite happy with the results both inside and out. It's presentable at least.

I also fitted a brand new circa 1988 Peter Brock Energy Polarizer sourced from Peter and Bev Brock (it was the last one they had).

And here's how the boot looks.

Now the downside....

We weren't able to complete the TomTom dash to my satisfaction so it will stay off for the show.

There's a last minute push to get all the electronic enhancements finished but some items such as my in-built shift light won't be properly calibrated as I just haven't got the time.

It's a dash to get as much done before Friday when the show starts.

If you're at the show pop in and say hi!

How do you get your boot to stay up with all the dynamat and carpet? Gas strut?

We used lightweight material for the contoured board/carpet and "balanced" the boot before fitment.

No gas strut required.

Well I'm heading back to the UK in a couple of days and my car is about 95% how I envisioned it eight years ago. One last major feature to be incorporated which is the TomTom dash and a lot of little things like replacing the digital dash counter LED and changing some lights in and around the car to LEDs. I'm also looking at a reversing rear view mirror combo but I'd like to see whether I can use the VL mirror as a base for it and not look out of place. Also where to mount the camera without making holes in the bumper and so forth.

As I've mentioned previously, the car and me has always attracted bad luck. It's attracted some ****ty workmanship, dodgy people, random events that would never happen to any other car, and I've wasted tons of cash correcting screwups from places such as those two notorius red fronted building car stereo places in Morley and Cannington to scratching my car two days from total respray and a hole in a petroltank from another well known car stereo joint in Cannington to random events like two places going bankrupt whilst my car or bits of car was in the workshop and me pulling favours to retrieve parts. In additions to these examples (yes there are more, a lot more events that would leave you convinced the car is cursed). Let's not mention intentional malicious damage to the car itself from certain pricks in society. I don't want to even mention some personal issues I've been through with this car to get things right.

And so it continues....We nearly had a punch up with some asswipe last night whilst taking photos of the car as he said we were there to steal stuff from the property. He was about to scratch my car but stopped short of the threat. I would probably be writing this entry from jail if he did... It never ends!

But I have to admit, I'm glad I have good mates to help me out when it all goes to hell...
