SIroller's A8 MX7 SL stationwagon

edit Oct 2017:
here are all of my build thread links over the years on CT

vn 5l Berlina
1973 Toyota Corona
dad's executive wagon - gold - $800 farm find
dad's blue n/a a9y
VL Berlina farm find efi 304 project
my first VL - n/a calais sedan
GMH test car - styling depatrtment - dandenong - Formula
My old VY Daily
Jim's mowing trailer, bloody dad gave this away!
Datsun 200b 1977 IRS shouldn't have sold! Young and dumb.

g'day CT how are you all?

this is my new wagon, (paid for 14/9/08)

* link to FS thread *

THE CAR -

BUILD DATE - march 87
engine / trans - A8 / MX7 (5speed man)
spec level - SL (base)
interior colour - Grey
exterior colour - marinello red
bumper trim colour - mx grey
kms - approximately 270 on body / trans / diff 4 km on the engine.

HISTORY -

this car was originally bought in the gippsland area before being sold onto a farmer in tatura (goulburn valley VIC) the car was found sitting neglected and pretty rough by some young fella who had plans to chop holes for an intercooler and god knows what else but thankfully he wasn't very motivated and the car continued to be neglected and fade away until one of our very own forum members stumbled across. being a man who appreciates originality he describes the purchase as one motivated by pity!

once in the owners hands lots of nasty suprises reared their head including a warped head, siezed turbo, water in the block and many other problems associated with cars that aren't properly maintained. he actually sold me the car with a set of original gm spark leads! the car saw a general tidy up aswell as:

rebuilt original block to og standards
rebuilt turbo
new clutch
og hubbies
NOS mudflaps
NOS wagon exhaust

after a smash to my first vl (CAL415) * thread link here * i was on the prowl for an og turbo manual but had given up hope of finding a wagon with those specs or even a manual and had broadaned the search to any og turbo except for a calais. 2 days out from getting a car inspected and making a final offer the owner fell through on me so a little disheartened i jumped back on ct / carsales / ebay and started searching for cars again and to my suprise found this wagon F.S. i immediately rang and organised my father to go and negotiate / lay down some cash the next morning.

and that brings us to this point...

PLANS -
the plans for this car are -

1. obtain roady certificate. to do this i will need...
headlights restoed
brake calipers rebuilt possibly new discs
new windscreen

2. basic service on gearbox and diff as these haven't been touched since god knows when (and if they are anything like the rest of the car maybe never!)

3. basic mods -
vt brake upgrade
rear side venetians
3" dump back exhaust inc. highflow cat
no holes cooler kit
highflow filter
formula headrest inserts (fitted)
s2 dash colour air vent surrounds
sunglasses holder
4. drive it, show it at lowlevel static car shows, enjoy it!

PICTURES -

hope you love it and please respect that whatever your thought are on how i should or should not mod the car i plan to make some small changes while retaining originality and that all replaced or removed pieces will find a home under wraps in my shed 'just incase'

thanks whoever approved this asap for me and thanks to brett for passing the message along to the higher powers!

thanks guys the credit really goes to LW5MX7 at the moment as he has done all of the work. there are a few things to tidy up and finish up but she is definately a gem. some guy is wrecking a manual a8 wagon in sydney (in the f.s. driveline area.) what a shame.

already picked up -
15" spare wheel cover spare
new gmh glass for headlights
won a set of tyc headlights on ebay just gotta pick em up. they will cop the gmh glass.

Don't fit the TYC head lights, just use them as parts and restore your GMH ones (TYC ones are weak and break very easily when installing and adjusting them). Heres a link to a tech article on how to do it

Don't You have new GMH glass? New head lights will make a massive difference to the front end appearance.

YES! run dmc lol. i alos picked up jazzy jeff and the fresh prince casssingle "boom shake the room" and some hammer. we are doing well i think the hubbies will be only occasionaly used for car shows and the like. i am thinking it needs to be set up with a few choice tapes and looking externally o.g. for some sort of display. any other late 80's inspired items which would make a good car display?

but what should i run the car on when on the street? for the enjoyment of driving id like some wheels bigger that 205 chasers. i want performance (so larger and wider) but as the car will be on superlows i think 18"s will be too big foir comfort. i have a spare set of walkies to bolt on that will be a good start.

Seeing as your keeping it mostly stock I would think Walkies would be a good idea as FR's etc are more for the performance looking vehicles I think maybe some 17" VY SS' might do the trick as their cheap now, good for performance I surpose and don't look too bad.

What power mods are you getting? Exhaust, FMIC? More boost? Anything or keeping it totally stocko?

Wow Mitch! I never knew you bought this! Great buy!

Your post has confused me though - is the motor and turbo fucked? Full of water/seized?

Does it have FE2? That tape deck is mint; I'm actually after one that good as well...

Regarding the wheels, keep the VLT hubbies, but get some steelies welded. That way you have the width, and still keep the OG look.

the motor and turbo were seized and collecting water when the last owner bought the car i will reread the first post and make sure its clear.

the car doesn't have fe2 which seems strange but being an sl it would appear that wasn't a factory item. it does however have power steer and aircon which would theoretically make it an executive. these are factory fitted as per the build sheet and not dealer fitted however so the car is certainly an oddity

might go wider rims how wide could you go? and can you get 22/235s in 15"s for street use?

edit - you could go as wide as you want i suppose but what i meant was practically as in trying not to get scrubs etc. i think i might just get some rims as they don't scrub as much as 15"s which tend to get a baloon sidewall.

I think 9" wide should fit, but as always, depends on offset. You going to do it properly? Get the air con working and what not?

yeah will get the a/c working might need your assistance with that. but first thing is a roady we are getting there though to be truthfull it wasn't far off when i bought it.

these are my newest purchase and are walky style fronts and a rear with walky style headrests. these came out of a vn sv le wagon which met it's fate when it came around a blind corner and into a cow... cows are big.

sorry i missed this post.

mods will be -
no holes cooler kit and afm hidden in piping. (not in stock position and not visible from the top i will need to get an 'extenda-harness made up and if you can imagine a gktech no holes kit imagine the afm down the bottom.)

3" exhaust dumped at the diff with a 2 1/4" pea shooter out tha back (looks stock)

eventually - superlows all round with nolathane bush kit swaybars the whole lot. make her hold the road

as for the rims i think low profile tyres on 17s will be good maybe some of those hdt aeros from the vn range. otherwise i will go all out on decorsas or momo status for the car but only for show and the walkies for go.
