1987 VL BT1 Build Thread

History:
Car originated from Brunswick Police Station, Victoria. Was a genuine police interceptor. The VL was in service and first resisted by Brunswick Police Station from 31/03/1987, unsure exactly how long the car was in service for but the registration was changed on the 11/04/1988.

After months of searching I purchased this car on the 23/01/2010, It was pretty much what i was after and the price suited me. Although i would have preferred it to be still complete it was all genuine, no previous damage or accidents, it hadn't been hacked up, and has little to no rust.

Interior:

Sounds good, only thing you could ditch would be the forged pistons if you're not aiming for much higher power figures although its good to get done while the motor is apart if you're going to up the power later.

i just picked up my A8 blocked yesterday ready for assembling
block bored 20thou,crack test,honed,decked,acid dipped,welsh plugs replaced
crank shaft linished, crank crack tested checked all conrods for size
The cyl head full over haul crack/pressure test surface grind ,reface all lifters reset the preloads lapp the vavles, replace the stem seals and cleaned and reassembled so its read to fit to engine
Fully balanced fit new pistons to rods (forgies Wiseco)
check oil pump for clearances and for wear
supply engine bearings big ends and mains
I think i have left something out
all that for $1200
The guy who done it for me is old school machine shop he does everything him self. whilst i was there picking up stuff an engine recond shop was dropping stuff to him to be machined. this guy is a legend
The engine is ready for assembling i have to pull my finger out LOL

probably old pistons out of a smashed block at that price

the price isn't bad round the 5k mark

for 300kw just stick with the standard casties will do it easy if anything the rods will let go before the pistons

Ive been researching his for months (check my threads) finaly came up with this person and this quote before i 100% agree i just wanted those who have experienced this opinions...

at the end of the day for an extra $600 or so i think its worth going forged, i dont think ill have a problem with the beams with this sort of power? i was under the impression standered ones can handle 300RWKW...

just build it for the power you want trust me its less stress than owning a car with expensive insides

just standard rebuild blueprint it and balance it properly and it'll handle 350rwkw easily and you only want 300kw at the engine

save your cash take your girl out for the night it works out better in the long run

Thanks for the advice mate, ill take into into consideration, but as said in the future if i want to go with more power at least this way i can...

Going through the quote one last time before i take it in, anyone else think im missing something?

Just in regards to the turbo/tuning/computer side of things, do those work shops care if the motors been built by others??? sorrry for all the questions as said this is the first turbo motor ive done...

thanks for the help advice so far...

for an extra $700 you could throw in a set of spool rods and it'd then handle 450rwkw and you would never have to think about it again.

I agree with Morgz. To save the extra heart ake if something breaks or is going to break because of a weak component buy your self some spool or precision rods.
