Holley Carb Question

Heyas, got my Stock 5ltr VL.. rochester has **** itself, wanna bolt up a Holley, cause

a) they are easy to find in pretty good condition
b) people in this town dont have a clue how to tune a rochy'

But, im abit confused as to what size I need.. I believe a 600 - 650 should do it, but would say a 750 be way too much ?

What do you guys have on your stock motors ?

pity you don't have access to someone who knows what they're doing with the Quady's as IMO they are a much better option!

Bare in mind when your putting on the holley

you are gona loose all your pollution gear that is setup with the standard rochester providing it is setup at the moment

as the holley wont have all the conections and valves for this that the standard carb does

I have just finished connecting all mine up to take it over the pits

Use the quadrajet. They are almost the same as a 600 holley! I had mine tuned up on a VK motor in my HQ. (Same motor as VL) and stock it made 127 rwkw. I ended up getting more power using less fuel than when i drove in there!

for not to bad fuel consumption and for driving around town the vac seconds are a better choice as the secondaries will not open unless the throttle is full on etc. but the mechanicle secondaries seem to be the preferred choice for performance engines as the can control the butterflies etc.

You can also jet them differently aswell, I would recommend a 600 Vac Secondary because with a stock 5L, any larger won't do it justice and will probably use more fuel and not achieve much power. If you do some headwork and a bigger cam etc then you would look at 650 DP.

What? Quaddies are better on fuel due to the smaller primaries, and if you get some who can tune them they work well (and stay legal)

Quady can flow 750cfm I believe......

As someone else said, have you thought about borrowing a Holley from someone and getting your quaddy tuned by mail? I hear Autotechnique in Melbourne are meant to be guns with them!

stick with the quady, holden put hours of devolpment into that carb to go with that motor, so there is no reason you couldn't run one with a mid range cam (i ran one with a crane cch304a, but i'm a d**khead) mild ports etc.
just search for a good tuner

If he does wanna keep it. (my recomendation is keep it). Try this guy. He has just recently done a quaddy exchange for me for 240 bucks. The best 240 i have spent latley. When I took it to be dynoed the guys couldn't believe how close it was to being spot on.

go a 650 spreadbore DP, plenty of size for future mods, and capable of easy 300+ RWHP

If you want it too look pretty, go a DEMON.
