My 87 VL Executive

Hi guys, this is my ongoing project, an 87 VL Executive. Here's the story so far:
Im 16 and still on my learners and had this car given to my from my grandmother. I intend to fix it up for my P plates, and then most likely a turbo conversion and further mods after my P plates.

Make / Model: 1987 VL Executive
Colour: Morning Blue over MX Grey
Bodykit: Tell em they're dreamin`
Engine Type: RB30E
Engine Mods: None
Power: Meh
Exhaust: Standard
Gearbox: N/A 4 Speed Auto
Diff: 25 Spline single spinner
Brakes: Stock (Disc front, drum rear)
Suspension: Stock
Wheels/Tyres: Chasers
Interior: Standard Grey
Stereo: Standard

I have some ideas as to what i want to do with the car, such as:
- Body respray in the factory Morning Blue(paint is very faded due to it being left outside for the last 6 months of its life before i took ownership, its now garaged)(Done)

- Powder coat interceptors and centre caps silver - Done

- Replace front bumper (it was backed into while parked, have tracked down a brand new kit already) - Done

- New front shocks (as the ones it has are seized) - Done

- Berlina or Calais tail lights (not a big fan on the executive tail lights), but ive decided against a calais mock-up - Done

- Calais or berlina cluster

- Fix up odds and ends in the engine bay (coolant and washer bottle is cracked and needs replacement, general engine bay clean out as its pretty dirty) - Done

Post P-plate mods:
Boost! And associated mods: trans, diff, brakes etc.

Time and money are a bit scarce for me due to school and work. However, my dad is a mechanic so labour costs will be low as we do a lot of work ourselves (im learning as i go basically).

Notice the L plates hahaha

As you can see, the paint is stuffed (i wasnt happy, but all will be fixed in time). Generally it just needs a bit of tlc, which it has been lacking over the years. Since the car was given to me, i have given it a service (oil, filter, trans flush and oil change, coolant flush), the motor is in great condition as it was serviced every 5000kms and only did local drives.
Thats all for now, should hopefully have some new pics up soon. Any feedback or advice is greatly appreciated.

---------- Post added 19-08-12 at 16:43 ----------

Ok so heres a basic update with some more pics of the car

The interior, while a bit dirty, is in excellent condition. I think in the past 20 years, about only 5 people have actually sat in the back seats!

A couple of engine bay shots

Pulling the bumpers off

Also replaced the right hand indicator, as it was also broken (no pics of the new one yet)

Hoping to have the new bumper kit sprayed, the chasers and caps powder coated, and a new set of front shocks within the next couple of weeks.

Sorry for the bad photography, i was using my ipod and it wasn't very well lit in the garage

Good to see you made a thread man, You can just spray your rims, centre caps and wheels nuts yourself like I did. Just get some cheap aerosol cans in silver, thats what I did anyway, I got the SCA brand paint and its been working quite well, hasn't chipped or flaked off at all, just letting you know to save yourself some money. The car looks good mate, very O.G. and granny-spec, I got mine off my mates grandfather its good knowing its not mollested... As for mods keep it clean, tasteful mods i.e. full exhaust, k&n panel filter, lowered, system or keep it all original interior, and definatly a berlina/calais dash, you should be able to find one for around $150 - 200 max anything over this is way overpriced. Also a little advice about owning a VL, be patient with it, I was just like you in that I got one on my L's... Keep in mind that they are 25 years old and stuff will break...

Anyway sorry if I rambled on a bit, Im very keen to see how this turns out, should look shmick with a respray..

Cheers for the feedback guys, I really appreciate it.
onetidyvl: thanks for the help already and cheers for the heads up on the paint.
In response to VLT222, i intend to keep mods at the moment to a minimum, the interior will remain untouched (just going to replace the seat covers) as its in near pristine condition, just needs to be cleaned. The re-spray should hopefully happen sometime later this year or early to mid next year (depending on funds and time). With regards to the wheels, my dad knows a guy who sandblasts and powdercoats so it should get done at "mates rates" hopefully. And im expecting things to break, we've already discovered the electronic boot release doesnt work and the boot lock itself is dodgy, just adding to the list of things yet to come.
Should have some updates after this weekend hopefully!

Didn't know that man, you's are lucky. NSW don't let us have any turbo/ supercharged or bigger than a 6 cyl, so for now all i can do is dream

BigM22 thats good man, if I were you Id just keep it mint then when it comes to that time, get a turbo setup for it

thats definately the plan. And in VIC its the same p plate laws, no v8s, no turbos, biggest you can have is an N/A 6 cylinder

Ok so heres a bit of update, got a few goodies that have arrived and cant wait to get them on the car.

Got a full front bumper set, MX gray paint (from Holden), and a set of Monroe front shocks

The old shocks were stuffed, when you go to compress them, they wouldnt return, when i was driving on them if felt like they were full of cement! Here's the new ones anyway (one was already on the car when i took this pic)

After the shock installation (hard to get a good pic, this was the best i had)

These will definately be replaced eventually....

Also got a calais boot garnish in not bad condition

keep you's posted soon.

Noice work mate, its coming along nicely. I'm keen to see what someone else's set of ceptors looks like powdercoated so keep the updates cominggg. And I don't think those bumpers you got from Holden are MX Grey, if they're brand new like mine were it should be some normal flat grey

I think he said the can of paint is MX Grey - from Holden.

Nice work you have done with the car thus far.

cheers guys, and samsSL, i was referring to the bumper paint, thats MX Grey. The bumpers themselves are flat grey because they're unpainted.

Another small update. Picked up my VK berlina taillights, no theyre not o.g Holden spec, but i dont have the patience or funds to find a genuine pair, not really fussed anyway. The headlights are original so thats good enough for me. Now have to figure out how to get the boot open (electronic release doesnt work, and the key wont turn in the lock), should hopefully get that sorted soon. Also hopefully going to order a new indicator stalk, indicator cancellors, and a VL berlina taillight extension within the next few weeks.

Here's a shot of the taillights (couldnt find the camera, another average i-pod pic)

Quick update:
Project has slowed down a little bit as we have a few other things in the works at the moment (rebuilding our neighbour's dirtbike, and building a new jetski trailer).
No word yet as to when the chasers will get powdercoated (pissing me off), and trying to figure out how to get the boot open so i can install the new lights. Waiting for some decent weather to spray the bumper and the side trims as well.
Might get some decent pics of the car up in a few days.

Alrighty then, seeing as the project has slowed down, thought id try and get a few decent snaps of her.

Still hasnt got a face yet, waiting for a good day to paint the new bumpers

The stockies without hubcaps look ****house, cannot wait to get the chasers on

everytime i see this..... But it seems to be the only major damage, aside from the small dint on the right hand front where it was backed into.

Hasnt actually done that many kms, one day it decided to start clocking in 10000kms, then one day it decided to stop.

Its been a while so I figure its time for an update

At the stage where I'm slowly collecting bits and pieces, so far I've:
–bought a Calais instrument cluster
–picked up a set of genuine metal center caps for the ceptors
–started to sandblast the wheels (DIY style is a pain in the arse)
–Given the interior a clean up

I'm just hunting around for a few other bits and pieces and then I want to get stuck into putting everything on

I got bored so I decided to have a look at the option plate, turns out that its actually morning blue. I found out that from when it was new, my dad worked at the workshop where it was serviced, which is why he ended up buying it for my grandmother. So its been in my family pretty much its while life.

Ok I wandered off a bit there. Anyway, I'll have some pics up soon

Are you going to be spraying the chasers? Or just blasting them..

I'm getting them powder coated. They won't hold up in the weather with just blank steel, even just sitting in the garage the blasted rims get rust spots
